Each and Every Coin

Surprises by Water

Picnic

This morning after my blood test I spent a little time in a park. It was breezy and cloudy. I'm really more of a summertime girl, but there is a loveliness about fall, too. A few years ago I did my best to embrace the season of winter. Perhaps this year, I can work on embracing the season of fall.

SUPER fun platelet update: 57,000 today! The platelets are coming back on their own! SO awesome. My doctor was very happy, too. I said: "Wow, that is so cool." Then he said: "Yes, that IS so cool!" It's looking very promising that my spleen and I are going to being staying together and not breaking-up afterall. I'm glad. This experience has really brought us together on a new level. :)

I'm looking forward to preaching on Sunday, and have been thinking a lot about the gospel text which will be Luke 15:1-10. The verses I've been pondering most are 8-10.

‘Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’

I've heard this parable before, and I always thought it was so predictable. Almost kind of cliche & cheesy. Woman loses coin. Woman finds coin. Woman is happy to find coin. People get lost. God finds those people. God is happy to find the people.

But upon reading the text this time, I'm struck by just how extravagant this woman's joy is over finding that one silver coin! She calls all her friends and neighbors! In her time and place, to say "rejoice with me" means "come on over and celebrate with me; it's party time." She is one excited lady.

The creator of the universe searches and searches and searches us out. And then God rejoices and celebrates when opportunites arise to connect with us. It's humbling to think about a God who cares THAT much about the value of each and every coin. Wow.

  1. I really like early fall, when it's warm, dry, and the colors are brilliant. Late fall is sad because it's cold, rainy, and the trees are mostly barren. I like to travel through really wooded and hilly areas in the early fall.
